City of Los Angeles Celebrates "Kobe Bryant Day"

August 24, 2017

LOS ANGELES, CA  — Nearly two years later since Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant retired from professional basketball, the city of Los Angeles isn't done saying goodbye to him just yet. The retired superstar is honored on today as the City Council declared August 24th as Kobe Bryant Day last year.

Councilmen Herb Wesson, Curren Price and Jose Huizar sponsored the resolution to honor the Lakers superstar by choosing Aug. 24 because it represents the two numbers Bryant wore during his 20-year tenure with the Lakers organization, 8 and 24.

Since retiring, Kobe has since dedicated his time to philanthropy works by focusing on youth sports and homelessness. He has recently launched a $100 million investment fund and currently runs the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF), dedicated to improving the lives of youth and families in need across the world and encouraging youth to stay active in sports.

Bryant had a farewell tour before scoring 60 points for the Lakers in his final home game at Staples Centers on April 13, 2015.
