Cal Poly Falls Short to Long Beach State Women's Basketball
LONG BEACH,CA -- Long Beach State hosted the Cal Poly women's basketball team in a Big West conference game on Saturday. A failed comeback attempt by Cal Poly fell short in their road game resulting in a 83-80 loss at the Walter Pyramid.
The 49ers came out strong in the first half of the game in which seemed like a blowout, but saw its lead dwindle to almost nothing in the final minutes of the game. The 49ers were able to make enough plays to maintain its lead and remain undefeated in conference play in the win over the Mustangs.
Cal Poly seemed doomed as Madison Montgomery scored two straight 3-pointers on the first two possessions for the 49ers. Senior point guard Anna Kim backed this up with two more to notch a 14-2 run. Long Beach State made their fist nine 3-point attempts within the first 20 minutes of the game, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and leading 46-31 at halftime.
The Mustangs entered the fourth quarter trailing 62-48, but with a big night from twins Dynn and Lynn Leaupepe, the 49ers couldn't shake the Mustangs. Cal Poly proved that a 15-point deficit was not insurmountable.
Long Beach State seemed to have lost momentum as they began playing sloppy in the second half. Leading 74-57 halfway through the fourth quarter, the Mustangs changed the flow of the game as they went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to five points with a minute remaining in the game.
The 49ers was able to hold on to its lead to come out with the win. As a point guard's job is to make plays and get their teammates the ball, tonight's matchup was the complete opposite. Long Beach State's Kim was able to steady a rocking boat for the 49ers as she made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to finish off one of the best games of her career.
"Tonight they did a good job of finding me when I was open," said Kim of her teammates. Sealing the victory for Long Beach State, she finished with 25 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting, five assists and two steals.
Since opening conference play, the Mustangs have now lost two straight games. Dynn Leaupepe came out with a team high of 23 points and five assists, while teammates Hannah Gilbert finished with 22 and Lynn Leaupepe with 19. They contributed to nearly all of the Mustangs offense.
In search of a sixth straight win, Long Beach State will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, while Cal Poly will look for a win the same day when they host Hawaii at the Mott Athletic Center.
