CLARKSDALE, MS -- In Tuesday's non-league matchup, the Coahoma County Red Panthers boy's basketball team overwhelmed the host Madison Palmer Dragons of Marks, MS, by a margin of 87-61 during the Coahoma Agricultural High School Basketball Christmas Tournament.
The game started off fast paced as the competition was high for both teams. The first quarter came to a close with the Red Panthers having a 25-20 lead. However, that changed as Coahoma County started to find their game in the second quarter, ending the half with the Dragons down 47-37 at halftime.
The Red Panthers started the second half taking no chances. Coahoama County's Coach Daryl Moore commented, "We simply wanted to end the game early on. We came to play." Coahoma County outscored the Dragons 19 to 11 in the third, and put the finishing touches on Palmer in the fourth quarter by defeating the Dragons 87-61 by scoring 21 points in the fourth, just 8 more than Madison Palmer.
Markevius Phillips (14) of Coahoma County Red Panthers was chosen as the Max Preps Player of the Game. He finished the game with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and six steals. He also went 100 percent at the free throw line, with six total high-flying dunks throughout the entire game.
Additionally, there were four other players from the Red Panthers who scored in double figures as well. Effernee Taylor added 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Jaylin McCray had 14 points. Forward Keion Cosby and guard Waltavious Cockenham both ended the night with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Red Panthers now boasts a 14-0 record as they prepare to take on Shaw next in a non-league outing. The Dragons will seek a win against Holly Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 10 as their record is now 0-9.
